That being said, culture fit does not translate to: \u201cLooking exactly like the current employees.\u201d You\u2019re a strong culture fit if your beliefs and values are cohesive with the company\u2019s beliefs and values.<\/p>\n
Wondering how to assess this? Try these four questions.<\/p>\n
Voicing your belief is one thing\u2014practicing it is another. To see whether the organization follows through, ask this question. If the hiring manager can immediately tell you two or three ways they\u2019ve witnessed their coworkers exercising their beliefs, you know they\u2019re committed.<\/p>\n
Certain profiles thrive at every company. If you don\u2019t mesh well with this personality type, you\u2019ll be unhappy (and potentially not as successful as you\u2019d like). Let\u2019s say the hiring manager says, \u201cActually, we\u2019ve noticed people who are comfortable working on their own are usually super successful.\u201d<\/p>\n
If you prefer teamwork, you might want to work somewhere more collaborative.<\/p>\n
This open-ended question gives the hiring manager a chance to tell you anything they deem is important. It helps you learn information you may not have anticipated, simply because you didn\u2019t know about it.<\/p>\n
To give you an idea, they might reply, \u201cWe really celebrate intelligent failure and encourage our team to take plenty of risks.\u201d If you work similarly, this is great news \u2014 and you never would have learned it if you hadn\u2019t asked this question.<\/p>\n
Every organization has traditions\u2014from the silly to the serious. The most beloved tradition will give you valuable insight into what employees value and\/or enjoy doing.<\/p>\n
Suppose the hiring manager responds, \u201cPeople love Taco Tuesday, when one department prepares tacos for the rest of the team. The department rotates every time, so the tacos always taste different, and it\u2019s fun to hang out with your coworkers and catch up.\u201d
The takeaways: This office is social, and work relationships are important.<\/p>\n
A very different answer would be: \u201cOur most popular tradition is probably Hack Night. Everyone stays up the entire night working on something innovative, whether that\u2019s a new feature, a new design, or a new experience.\u201d<\/p>\n
The takeaways: Employees are passionate about the product. If you\u2019re not technical, you might feel less involved.<\/p>\n
Depending on your personality and preferences, either company could be an amazing fit. Try to picture yourself participating in the tradition your interviewer offers. If you\u2019d probably love it, that\u2019s a great sign.<\/p>\n
