As mentioned in Part 1<\/a> of this article, navigating the interview process can be tricky. In Part 2, the questions that may feel like traps continue, but don\u2019t be dismayed. The answers below will help you navigate the interview process like a pro!<\/p>\n

3. \u201cWhere do you want to be in five years?\u201d<\/h2>\n

The right answer is without a doubt: \u201cAt your company, hopefully as a [insert title of job one or two rungs up] and helping you [insert company mission].<\/p>\n

Right?<\/p>\n

Wrong! The \u201cright\u201d answer changes for each organization. If the business wants people to stay and steadily climb the ranks, then maybe the above response is what they\u2019re looking for. But maybe they\u2019re more interested in getting smart people and then figuring out where they belong. In that case, a better answer would be, \u201cAt your company, solving interesting challenges on a team where I can maximize my skills.\u201d<\/p>\n

And if they\u2019re instead looking for ambitious people who will stick around for three years at the most, the optimal answer would be, \u201cI want to have learned X and Y, succeeded in doing A and B, and be working toward C and D.\u201d<\/p>\n

With that in mind, tell the truth (are you sensing a theme here?). The fact you\u2019ve thought about and planned for your future is impressive enough; having a path that complements the company\u2019s strategy is a potential gamechanger.<\/p>\n

4. \u201cWhy do you want to work here?\u201d<\/h2>\n

There\u2019s no doubt this is one of the most-feared and least-understood interview questions out there. It seems like a test of your devotion to the organization\u2014do you know it was founded in 1982? Has 1,118 employees? Sells 14 products in five categories?<\/p>\n

Trust me, the hiring manager isn\u2019t hoping you\u2019ll rattle off some fast facts about the company. Nor is she trying to get you to go on about how great it is in the hopes that you\u2019ll convince yourself that you want to work there, Inception-style.<\/p>\n

Her goal: Figure out whether the organization can meet your expectations. It\u2019s as simple as that.<\/p>\n

With this in mind, give a few authentic reasons you\u2019re excited about this opportunity. Just avoid salary, convenience, perks and\/or location reasons, like, \u201cYour headquarters is in Seattle, and my family really wants to move there,\u201d or \u201cI\u2019d like to make $10,000 more, and that\u2019s not possible in my current job.\u201d<\/p>\n

Instead, focus on what you\u2019ll get to contribute. Here\u2019s a sample answer:<\/p>\n

I\u2019m passionate about making websites more user-friendly. I\u2019ve seen almost everyone in my life struggle with navigating a site at one point or another, and good design can completely alleviate these issues. Not only is the visitor happier, the company achieves its goals\u2014selling them a product, answering their question, converting them into a lead, and so on. At your organization, I\u2019ll get to work on a vast variety of sites and interfaces. I\u2019ll be doing what I love in a collaborative, open, innovative environment.<\/p>\n

5. \u201cDo you have any questions for me?\u201d<\/h2>\n

The reason this question feels like a trick is because, well, the hiring manager isn\u2019t just asking it to make sure you don\u2019t have any lingering concerns. Yes, they want to be helpful, and yes, they\u2019re eager to answer any unresolved things on your mind\u2014but it\u2019s also a way to gauge how curious, insightful, and prepared you are.<\/p>\n

Reply, \u201cNo, I don\u2019t have any questions,\u201d and they\u2019ll assume you don\u2019t truly want the position (whether that\u2019s a fair characterization or not.)<\/p>\n

Say, \u201cYes, one thing: How much vacation time will I get?\u201d or \u201cHow quickly are most people in this role promoted?\u201d and they\u2019ll think, \u201cThis person only cares about the benefits or moving up the ladder.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ask, \u201cWhat do you like most about working here?\u201d and they may judge you for using the same question as every other candidate they\u2019ve talked to that day.<\/p>\n

To boost your chances of being hired, you need a creative, specific question such as:<\/p>\n

  • \n

    \u201cWhat would success look like after 90 days? Six months? A year?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  • \n

    \u201cWhat is this job\u2019s number one deliverable or metric?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  • \n

    \u201cIf people need help at [company], where do they go first?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  • \n

    \u201cHow does this role play into the larger organization\u2019s success?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Make sure you actually want to know the answer. It should tell you:<\/p>\n

    1. \n

      If you\u2019re a good fit for the company<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    2. \n

      If you\u2019re a good fit for the role<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    3. \n

      If you\u2019re a good fit for the culture<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      Once you\u2019ve asked your \u201cimpressive\u201d question (or multiple questions if you have them), you can and should ask more practical questions, like:<\/p>\n

        \u201cWill I get the opportunity to use [skill you really enjoy]?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

        \u201cHow quickly are you hoping to make a decision?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/li>\n
