Nothing. Nada. Zippo. Zilch.<\/p>\n<p>So you email the hiring manager a few days later and she replies, \u201cI\u2019m sorry, we\u2019re still mulling candidates. I KNOW we\u2019ll be making a decision within the week.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And again: crickets.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nerve wracking. EXTREMELY nerve wracking.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>One may think, \u201cWell, the job market\u2019s changed a lot in the last several months. Companies aren\u2019t as desperate for candidates now and they have many more to choose from, so they\u2019re taking their time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>You <em>could<\/em> be right.<\/p>\n<p>But\u2026a Vox.com article back in September 2021, when the job market definitely favored candidates and employers were desperate to hire, even then the article said \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/recode\/22673353\/unemployment-job-search-linkedin-indeed-algorithm\">everyone\u2019s hiring but no one\u2019s getting hired<\/a>\u201d due to the country\u2019s \u201cbroken hiring system.\u201d (Read the article. Seriously. It\u2019s fascinating and, well, things haven\u2019t changed much\u2026)<\/p>\n<p>Today, when the economy is chugging along even after warnings of a recession, job vacancies still remain vacant and job candidates STILL often can\u2019t find work.<\/p>\n<p>There could be a few reasons:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Employers are doing what some pundits are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodmorningamerica.com\/living\/story\/remember-quiet-quitting-quiet-hiring-new-workplace-trend-96615428#:~:text=Why%20is%20quiet%20hiring%20a,is%20a%20widespread%20talent%20shortage.\">calling \u201cquiet hiring<\/a>,\u201d in that they are <a href=\"https:\/\/dexian-brasil.website-in-dev.co.uk\/blog\/upskilling-yourself-for-career-success\/\">upskilling\/reskilling current employees to fill new or at least newly needed positions due to advances in technology.<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Businesses are still worried about a market downturn; they are turning really cautious when it comes to hiring. They\u2019re also not letting people go as much as economists had thought. Instead, they are \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/06\/01\/economy\/may-jobs-report-preview\/index.html\">continuing to hoard workers<\/a>,\u201d just in case business picks up a good amount.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Yet we believe there are additional reasons, for the delay between when an employer says she\u2019ll call you and when she actually does:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Internal Processes and Decision-Making<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Employers today have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/the-goods\/2023\/1\/12\/23546379\/job-interviewing-applying-exhausting-tests-employment\">complex internal procedures that involve multiple stakeholders and decision-makers<\/a>. This inevitably slows down the decision-making process, resulting in delays in notifying candidates.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, unforeseen circumstances often pop up: budget constraints, workforce re-evaluations, or even organizational changes.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li><strong>A high volume of applications.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Companies may have several openings but they also have many candidates. Remote work means they can end up hiring someone who doesn\u2019t even live in the same state, let alone the same region as the company.\u00a0 They, therefore, have a much larger applicant pool.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, many currently employed people are looking to switch employers, particularly if they have a remote-able position, but their boss insists on in-person work.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li><strong>Legal considerations.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>There\u2019s a lot to do when it comes to hiring. Some businesses run in industries with strict legal and\/or regulatory requirements that can affect the speed of their decision-making.<\/p>\n<p>Background checks, verifying references, and complying with myriad labor laws often contribute to longer decision-making timelines. Remember, employers need to navigate their way through these laws\/requirements in order to make sure they have a fair and compliant hiring process.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tips and strategies to help you weather decision delays<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>As you\u2019re leaving the interview, ask about the projected timeline on a decision. You\u2019ll get a better understanding of the employer\u2019s perspective\/timeline and so you\u2019ll be better able to manage your expectations and reduce your worries.<\/li>\n<li>Understand that the hiring manager <strong>wants<\/strong> to make a decision quickly but may not be able to. In addition, as a rule of thumb, if she tells you she\u2019ll have a decision within five days, double it at minimum.<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t be afraid to email the hiring manager after the 10 days to see where she is in the hiring process. She may not have an answer, she may not reply to you, but she\u2019ll see that you\u2019re politely and professionally \u2013 following up. (Points to you, truly, as you\u2019re showing continued interest in the position.)<\/li>\n<li>Keep looking for other opportunities. Even if this is the perfect job for you, keep looking. Even if you\u2019re certain the hiring manager will choose you, keep looking. If anything, you may receive an offer for another job and you can use that as leverage: \u201cHello, Hiring Manager. I know you haven\u2019t made a decision, yet I want you to know that I\u2019ve received another offer and I need to let them know within X days. Is there any way you could let me know if I\u2019m a top contender?\u201d You\u2019ll either hear yes or no.
