{"id":1978,"date":"2023-07-14T17:25:32","date_gmt":"2023-07-14T17:25:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dexian-brasil.website-in-dev.co.uk\/?p=1978"},"modified":"2024-07-20T01:58:19","modified_gmt":"2024-07-20T01:58:19","slug":"overcoming-ageism-millennials","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brasil.dexian.com\/en\/blog\/overcoming-ageism-millennials\/","title":{"rendered":"Overcoming Ageism: Career Tips for Millennials"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Yes, unfortunately, it\u2019s starting to happen: the oldest millennials have now reached their early 40s and the millions of members of this generational cohort are aging right along behind them.<\/p>\n<p>Is ageism in hiring on their heels?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Yes.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Millennials are now the largest generational group cohort in the workforce, <a href=\"https:\/\/teamstage.io\/millennials-in-the-workplace-statistics\/#:~:text=How%20much%20of%20the%20workforce,Xers%20in%20the%20US%20workforce.\">at 35 percent<\/a>. (There are about 56 million millennials working in the U.S.)<\/p>\n<p>Just a handful of years ago millennials, particularly young millennials, might have been discriminated against in the workplace <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/90651334\/millennials-face-yet-another-workplace-challenge-ageism\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">because hiring managers thought they were too young<\/a>. Yet that was then.<\/p>\n<p>Now that they\u2019re seeing middle age and beyond in their headlamps, things could well change shortly: A <a href=\"chrome-extension:\/\/efaidnbmnnnibpcajpcglclefindmkaj\/https:\/www.shrm.org\/hr-today\/trends-and-forecasting\/research-and-surveys\/documents\/shrm%20ageism%20study%20topline%20findings.pdf\">2020 study performed by the Society of Human Resources Professionals (SHRM)<\/a> found that \u201colder\u201d millennials (then between the ages of 31-39, who now would be aged 35-42) said they had already felt discriminated against due to their age:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>23 percent said they felt discriminated against in the \u201cjob application process,\u201d<\/li>\n<li>32 percent felt they were discriminated against when it came to \u201copportunities of job promotion.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In addition, nearly half of hiring managers in a 2022 survey \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrdive.com\/news\/nearly-half-of-hiring-managers-admit-to-age-bias-in-resume-builder-survey\/619333\/\">admitted to age bias<\/a>,\u201d and a 2018 article posted \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrdive.com\/news\/outlawed-for-50-years-age-discrimination-remains-employments-open-secret\/515407\/#:~:text=Outlawed%20for%2050%20years%2C%20age%20discrimination%20remains%20employment's%20'open%20secret',-Published%20Jan.&amp;text=When%20Congress%20enacted%20Title%20VII,left%20out%20of%20the%20law.\">discrimination remains employment\u2019s \u2018open secret<\/a>.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>You\u2019re not getting any younger: strategies to help you overcome ageism when applying for work.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>With any luck, all of us someday will be able to say \u201cYes, I\u2019m definitely old) and grateful to be to have made it so long).\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Yet your 40s and 50s \u2013 and some would say 60s \u2013 are NOT that someday.<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019re going to have to have some kind of income before you hit 62 (the current youngest age you could potentially deal with ageism in the most profound way by retiring\/start collecting Social Security payments), so let\u2019s discuss some strategies and ideas to help you combat ageism as you grow older.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Emphasize your value proposition.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Highlight the unique skills, expertise and accomplishments you bring to an employer. Showcase the results you\u2019ve achieved throughout your career and be sure to explain how they directly benefited your past\/current employers.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Stay current and adaptable.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>One of the \u201creasons\u201d for age discrimination is that employers think older people are stuck in ruts, set in their ways, unwilling to \u2013 or even incapable of \u2013 learning new things.<\/p>\n<p>Prove that you are up-to-date with your industry\u2019s trends, tech and best practices. <a href=\"\/blog\/upskilling-yourself-for-career-success\/\">Invest in continuous learning\/upskilling\/reskilling<\/a> to showcase your ability to adapt to change \u2013 and that you have up-to-the-minute in-demand skills.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Showcase your transferable skills.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Emphasize the skills you\u2019ve acquired during your career that are relevant to the position to which you\u2019re applying. Highlight your excellent communication skills, as well as how well you solve problems, lead teams, and manage projects.<\/p>\n<p>By showcasing these skills, you demonstrate how well you\u2019re able to take on new challenges.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Leverage your network. <\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Networking is by far the most important tool in your job seeker tool belt. Build and expand your professional network by joining relevant associations, attending networking events, and reaching out to peers and mentors.<\/p>\n<p>Networking is the absolute best way to find great jobs. It also can help you find hidden job opportunities and connect with potential employers who value diversity of experience.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Consider a skills-based resume.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Rather than focusing on a chronological work history, create a resume that focuses on your qualifications, skills, and accomplishments. This format lets you emphasize how your experience and skills are relevant to the job, no matter how many years you\u2019ve been in the workforce.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Address age-related concerns.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>During interviews or networking meetings, address any concerns about your age or experience.
