{"id":1929,"date":"2023-06-06T15:28:27","date_gmt":"2023-06-06T15:28:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dexian-brasil.website-in-dev.co.uk\/?p=1929"},"modified":"2023-08-21T16:31:01","modified_gmt":"2023-08-21T16:31:01","slug":"skill-or-degree","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brasil.dexian.com\/en\/blog\/skill-or-degree\/","title":{"rendered":"Skill or Degree: Rethinking the Future of Work"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Whether the job market is cooling \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/dexian-brasil.website-in-dev.co.uk\/blog\/job-searching-in-the-current-job-market\/\">or it isn\u2019t<\/a> \u2013those with tech skills still will be greatly in demand.<\/p>\n<p>As in: Skills will be at a premium and interest in folks with these skills could well be stratospheric.<\/p>\n<p>Some facts:<\/p>\n<p>The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported in early April that employment in the tech sector (which, it should be noted, includes <strong>all<\/strong> people on a tech company\u2019s payroll, not just those who have IT skills), fell in March by about 839 jobs.<\/p>\n<p>Yet \u2013 oh, and yet! \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.computerworld.com\/article\/3542681\/how-many-jobs-are-available-in-technology.html\">employer job postings for tech positions <strong>increased by 75,546 <\/strong>month-over-month in March<\/a>. The numbers totaled 316,000 openings, with a tech unemployment rate of just 2.2 percent.<\/p>\n<p>But the major point here is this: <strong>there \u201care far more openings than people to fill them.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>If you\u2019re a tech hiring manager, that\u2019s a problem<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you don\u2019t have the talent, you:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>Can\u2019t move your company into the future \u2013 you\u2019ll always be playing catch up. Or worse: you\u2019ll be working extremely hard just to not fall behind.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>Your current team members may need to work longer hours, potentially incurring burnout.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>The quality of your service\/product could decline, potentially causing you to lose customers\/not gain new ones.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>If this continues, you could lose revenue\/profit, potentially affecting not just profitability, but possibly your very ability to remain in business.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>What\u2019s a CEO, HR officer, CFO and, of course, a CIO to do?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Hire for capabilities, not credentials<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>This is what we mean by that: <strong>hire for skills, not a degree.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Many highly talented tech pros may not have a college degree, but instead possess the skills, certifications, and experience needed for a particular IT job.<\/p>\n<p>A skills-based hire is one in which a company\/hiring manager focuses on a candidate\u2019s skills \u2013 and possibly past performance in a previous position \u2013 rather than the \u201ctraditional\u201d qualifications of a bachelor\u2019s or master\u2019s degree.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>Hiring for capabilities focuses on job-based skills as well as performance rather than degrees or even certain IT certifications.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>Focusing on a candidate\u2019s skills widens your talent pool while also increasing your chances of finding the right person for the job. (This can be especially pertinent in fields such as cybersecurity and data analytics, in which demand for these professionals far outstrips the available talent pool.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>A larger talent pool also means a speedier time-to-hire as well as access to a more diverse group of candidates.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>In addition, you\u2019ll also spend less time onboarding\/training skilled workers, saving you additional time and funds.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>Hiring for skills can also streamline your recruitment process because a company can focus on the most important factors: the actual skills and experience needed to do the job.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>Companies could also find they hire a more diverse and inclusive workforce. Valuing skills\/experience over academic credentials can reduce bias and create opportunities for team members from a wider range of experiences and backgrounds.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>An accelerating trend<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Hiring for skills rather than degrees already is well underway and is expected to grow in coming years due to the rapid pace of technological change.<\/p>\n<p>New tech continually emerges and existing ones continue to evolve; therefore, the demand for uber-specialized skills will only increase and those companies that quickly identify and hire these candidates will have a leg up on their competitors.<\/p>\n<p>Hiring for skills also helps companies meet the changing nature or work itself.
