{"id":153,"date":"2023-04-24T14:22:03","date_gmt":"2023-04-24T14:22:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dexian-brasil.website-in-dev.co.uk\/cyber-warfare-poses-looming-threat-to-u-s-organizations\/"},"modified":"2023-05-22T02:06:00","modified_gmt":"2023-05-22T02:06:00","slug":"cyber-warfare-poses-looming-threat-to-u-s-organizations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brasil.dexian.com\/en\/blog\/cyber-warfare-poses-looming-threat-to-u-s-organizations\/","title":{"rendered":"Cyber Warfare Poses Looming Threat to U.S. Organizations"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u200b<span spantype=\"color\" style=\"color:rgb(0, 0, 0)\">On the heels of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sigconsult.com\/blog\/2020\/08\/cyberattacks-are-on-the-rise-and-cybersecurity-professionals-are-in-demand\"><span spantype=\"color\" style=\"color:rgb(0, 0, 255)\">rising cyberattacks<\/span><\/a><span spantype=\"color\" style=\"color:rgb(0, 0, 0)\"> as cybercriminals exploit the global pandemic to gain access to valuable data and unauthorized access to systems, U.S. businesses are now confronted with looming Russian cybersecurity threats amid the conflict with Ukraine.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span spantype=\"color\" style=\"color:rgb(0, 0, 0)\">The conflict in Ukraine is being felt far beyond the region\u2019s borders as Russia\u2019s formidable cyber forces look to launch a new wave of cyberattacks on Western energy, finance, and communications infrastructures.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span spantype=\"color\" style=\"color:rgb(0, 0, 0)\">In February, the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cisa.gov\/shields-up\"><span spantype=\"color\" style=\"color:rgb(0, 0, 255)\">issued a warning<\/span><\/a><span spantype=\"color\" style=\"color:rgb(0, 0, 0)\"> of the risk of Russian cyberattacks spilling over onto U.S. networks, which follows on the heels of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cisa.gov\/uscert\/ncas\/alerts\/aa22-011a\"><span spantype=\"color\" style=\"color:rgb(0, 0, 255)\">previous CISA warnings<\/span><\/a><span spantype=\"color\" style=\"color:rgb(0, 0, 0)\"> on the risks posed by Russian cyberattacks for U.S. critical infrastructure. The latest CISA report warns of:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span spantype=\"color\" style=\"color:rgb(0, 0, 0)\">A destructive malware against organizations in Ukraine that may spread to businesses in other countries, especially as sanctions continue. The malware, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cisa.gov\/uscert\/ncas\/alerts\/aa22-057a\"><span spantype=\"color\" style=\"color:rgb(0, 0, 255)\">known as WhisperGate<\/span><\/a><span spantype=\"color\" style=\"color:rgb(0, 0, 0)\">, for example, has been used to target organizations in Ukraine displaying a fake ransomware note, encrypting files based on certain file extensions. This destructive malware can destroy data, render devices inoperable, infiltrate networks, cut off access to critical data, and disrupt daily operations.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span spantype=\"color\" style=\"color:rgb(0, 0, 0)\">The malicious cyber actor known as Sandworm or Voodoo Bear is now using new malware, referred to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cisa.gov\/uscert\/ncas\/alerts\/aa22-054a\"><span spantype=\"color\" style=\"color:rgb(0, 0, 255)\">as Cyclops Blink<\/span><\/a><span spantype=\"color\" style=\"color:rgb(0, 0, 0)\"> which appears to be a replacement framework for the VPNFilter malware exposed in 2018. This malware exploits network devices, primarily small office\/home office routers and network-attached storage devices.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span spantype=\"color\" style=\"color:rgb(0, 0, 0)\">Recent <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cisa.gov\/uscert\/ncas\/alerts\/aa22-047a\"><span spantype=\"color\" style=\"color:rgb(0, 0, 255)\">regular targeting of U.S. cleared defense contractors<\/span><\/a><span spantype=\"color\" style=\"color:rgb(0, 0, 0)\"> (CDCs) by Russian state-sponsored cyber actors, attacking both large and small CDCs and subcontractors with varying levels of cybersecurity protocols and resources.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span spantype=\"color\" style=\"color:rgb(0, 0, 0)\">Russian state-sponsored APT actors have performed large-scale scans in an attempt to find vulnerable services and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cisa.gov\/uscert\/ncas\/alerts\/aa22-011a\"><span spantype=\"color\" style=\"color:rgb(0, 0, 255)\">spearphishing campaigns<\/span><\/a><span spantype=\"color\" style=\"color:rgb(0, 0, 0)\"> to gain credentials of target networks.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span spantype=\"color\" style=\"color:rgb(0, 0, 0)\">Russian state-sponsored cyber actors have gained network access through exploitation of default <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cisa.gov\/uscert\/ncas\/alerts\/aa22-074a\"><span spantype=\"color\" style=\"color:rgb(0, 0, 255)\">multifactor authentication protocols (MFAs) and a known vulnerability<\/span><\/a><span spantype=\"color\" style=\"color:rgb(0, 0, 0)\">. In 2021, Russian state-sponsored cyber actors took advantage of a misconfigured account set to default MFA protocols at a non-governmental organization, allowing them to enroll a new device for MFA and access the victim network, using Cisco\u2019s Duo MFA.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">\u200b<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span spantype=\"color\" style=\"color:rgb(0, 0, 0)\">Business and IT leaders should be preparing and testing the strength of their cybersecurity and intelligence protocols, including the review of business continuity plans, close examination of supply chain infrastructure, instilling a security mindset in employees, and ensuring collaboration between corporate intelligence and IT teams around cybersecurity threats.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span spantype=\"color\" style=\"color:rgb(0, 0, 0)\">In addition, MFA is one of the most important cybersecurity practices to reduce the risk of intrusions. According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/cisajen\/status\/1458169023162732553\"><span spantype=\"color\" style=\"color:rgb(0, 0, 255)\">industry research<\/span><\/a><span spantype=\"color\" style=\"color:rgb(0, 0, 0)\">, users who enable MFA are up to 99% less likely to have an account compromised. Therefore, every organization should enforce MFA for all employees and customers and encourage every user to sign up for MFA when available. Equally critical is the review of default configurations and modifying those as necessary to reduce the likelihood of a sophisticated adversary circumventing this measure.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span spantype=\"color\" style=\"color:rgb(0, 0, 0)\">Hope for the Best, Prepare for the Worst.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span spantype=\"color\" style=\"color:rgb(0, 0, 0)\">Although experts in the field say the Kremlin is likely <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/policy\/cybersecurity\/596782-russia-weighs-risks-of-launching-cyberattacks-against-the-west\/\"><span spantype=\"color\" style=\"color:rgb(0, 0, 255)\">still weighing<\/span><\/a><span spantype=\"color\" style=\"color:rgb(0, 0, 0)\"> whether destructive action in cyberspace is worth the blowback, there is a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/washington-post-live\/2022\/02\/28\/transcript-world-stage-ukraine-with-sen-mark-warner-d-va\/\"><span spantype=\"color\" style=\"color:rgb(0, 0, 255)\">likelihood<\/span><\/a><span spantype=\"color\" style=\"color:rgb(0, 0, 0)\"> that Russia will use cyberattacks in response to crippling level of sanctions against the country.
